A fire that destroyed Saskatoon's German Concordia Club on Tuesday night is being investigated as arson, fire officials said.

Fire was reported at the club on the southern edge of the city at around 11 p.m.

When crews arrived at the building at 160 Cartwright St., multiple fires were burning in the club and a nearby shed, the fire department said.

"It was sort of out of control," said witness Gail Stephenson, who lives in the area and took pictures of the fire.

It took more than three hours to bring the blaze under control, butlittle could be saved. The blaze reduced the building to a pile of blackened rubble.

Crews were hampered by the lack of a nearby fire hydrant.

They had to lay hoses from a hydrant that was one kilometre away, stopping train service so the hoses could cross a CN rail line.

An arson investigator was on scene Wednesday. According to the club's website, it has been open for 40 years.

One of the main features of the building was a mural by Hans Herold, a renowned German Canadian artist.

The firehappened a day after a fire destroyedSaskatoon'sMasonic Temple. Fire officialssaid arson is not suspected as the cause of that blaze.
