Sask. RCMP investigating after dead body found on Big Island Lake Cree Nation

Saskatchewan RCMP say a woman was found dead in a residence at Big Island Lake Cree Nation Thursday afternoon.

Pierceland RCMP saidthey received a report just before 3 p.m CST of a serious injury at a home in the community, located near the Alberta border about 320 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

Upon arrival, officers found a body.

The woman and her age have not been identified.

RCMP called the death "suspicious in nature," butsaidthere is no risk to public safety at this time.

Saskatchewan RCMP'smajor crimes unit has taken over the investigation.

Arrests made in another First Nations community

Meanwhile, in a case unrelated to the Big Island death, RCMP arrested two people for multiple weapons charges in Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation on Thursday.

Ethan Swiftwolfe, 27, and Rachel Kytwayhat, 41, are each charged with one count of resisting a police officer, possession of weapon contrary to orderand possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Swiftwolfe is also charged with one additional count of possession of weapon contrary to order.

Loon Lake RCMPsay they had a warrant for Swiftwolfe's arrest.

Officers entered the home on Thursday and, with the assistance of the Saskatchewan RCMP's Critical Incident Response Team, arrested Swiftwolfe and Kytwayhat.

Two firearms, two machetes and a homemade conducted energy device were located in the home as part of the investigation, RCMP say.

Both accused are scheduled to appear in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on Sept. 16, 2024.
