A man, 20, from Calgary faces three counts of attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of a Regina cab driver and alleged attacks on two others on Thursday.

The cab driver, Iqbal Singh Sharma, 31, and two other people were sent to hospital with injuries.

Friends of Sharma, a new Canadian who arrived from India four months ago,say he arrived in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times.

He has been placed in a medically induced coma as treatment continues, friends say.

Police said it appears there was an altercation inside the cab, which continued after the driver stopped on the 2100 block of Park St. and tried to get out.

Police located the 20-year-old suspect, who is also accused of four counts of breaching court-ordered release conditions, close to the stopped cab the same night.

He appeared in Regina provincial court on Monday.
