David Hyde, an independent security consultant, said that bigger cities already implement rigorous screening for nightclubs and Regina should consider more security and metal detectors.

A shooting early Friday morning outside the Pump Roadhouse in Regina has raised concerns about safety at bars and nightclubs in the city.

"This could have happened anywhere possibly. But there maybe could be some improvements that could be made at this bar and in other Regina bars," said Hyde.

He said that something needs to be done to prevent incidents like this one from becoming more frequent, especially as the city continues to grow.

Preventative measures

"I think that this is a wake-up call, this is a reminder to bar owners and managers that having a good reasonable level ofsecurity in place is required," he said.

He suggests metal detectors and careful screenings of individuals who are entering the property. It's also important to have enough bouncers who are properly trained and security cameras at the establishment.

"That would be either a wand to actually wand people down when they are arriving, searching through bags,it could be a walk through magnetometer, which is a walk through metal detector," said Hyde.

Property owners should also consider doing a risk assessment, and should become familiar with the groups of people who frequent the bar.
