7 University of Saskatchewan teams in CIS top 10, 4 from Regina

If rankings suggest anything, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies will be very entertaining in numerous sports in 2016.

Seven different Huskies Athletics teams cracked Canadian Interuniversity Sporttop 10 lists this week.

Leading the way is the No. 1-ranked women's basketball team, led by head coach Lisa Thomaidis. The Huskies are currently the top team in the country with a 10-0 record.

Thomaidis and the Huskies return to their home court on Friday, Jan. 15 and Saturday, Jan. 16 for a pair of games against the University of Lethbridge.

Luckily for University of Regina sports fans, the Cougars aren't far behind. A perennial favourite in women's basketball, the Cougars are currently 9-1 and ranked No. 4 in the CIS. They'll be on the road back-to-back weekends at UBC and Manitoba before returning home for a pair of games on Feb. 5 and 6.

In men's basketball, the Huskies (3-7) and Cougars (7-3) both failed to crack the top 10.

Huskies remain hockey powerhouse

After starting the season 7-0, the Huskies men's hockey team have slipped slightly before holiday in the CIS top 10. However, they're still first in the Canada West standings.

Dave Adolph's squad is currently ranked No. 3 in the country with a Canada West-leading 15-3 record. Acadia and McGill are the only teams ahead of Saskatchewan.

The Huskies came back from the holiday break with two big wins against Lethbridge last weekend. They'll return to Rutherford Arena on Jan. 15 and 16 to take on the University of Calgary.

Regina (4-14) are currently last in the Canada West and did not crack the CIS top 10.

On the women's side, head coach Steve Kook once again has the Huskies looking like a championship contender.

This week, the U of S women's hockey team (11-5-2) moved up one spot to No. 6 in the CIS top 10. Kook's team is only two points behind Alberta for first place in the Canada West.

The Huskies in Calgary this weekend before returning home on Jan. 22.

The University of Regina women's hockey team are not ranked in the top 10, however, they're also not far behind the Huskies with a 10-7-1 record. The Cougars are in Lethbridge this weekend. They'll also return home on Jan. 22.
