39-year-old man charged with 2nd-degree murder in death of Okanese First Nation woman

A 39-year-old has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of a woman in southeastern Saskatchewan on Tuesday.

The File Hills First Nations Police Service was called with areport of aninjured person in a home in Okanese First Nation, about 100 kilometres northeast of Regina, early Tuesday morning.

Officers found Amanda Keewatin, a 32-year-old woman from Peepeekisis Cree Nation, injured at the home. Shewas declared dead at the scene by paramedics, RCMP said in a Wednesday news release. Herfamily has been notified of her death, police said.

The initial investigationby File Hills police determined herdeath was suspicious, and the RCMP's major crimes unit took over toinvestigate further.

Police arrested 39-year-old James Stonechild, who is from Okanese, and charged him with one count of second-degree murder.

Stonechildwas set to make first court appearance on Wednesday at Regina provincial court.
