2 dead in crash on Highway 1 east of Regina

Two people were found deadat the scene of a crash on Highway1 east of Regina, near Pilot Butte, Wednesday.

Police say the two deceased were in a Pontiac Vibe, aman and woman in her 60s. Police say they are residents of Emerald Park.

RCMP said the driver of ared Dodgetruck was treated by EMS at the scene.

They said it appeared that the the car was going south on Highway 624 and was crossing Highway 1 when the truck, which was westbound on Highway 1, crashed into the car in what is called a T-bone collision.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Safety concerns along that stretch of highway have been noted in the past. Earlier this year a crash involving a semi-trailer and a car killed one man. Another death was noted in the area in a 2013 crash.

A year ago, the speed limit was reduced to 90 km/hour.

"This is our first fatal collision since the reduced speed zone specifically in this portion in the new 90 zone," RCMP Cpl. Dean Onyskevitch said Wednesday. "Whether lights would've helped, it's possible."

The crash happened shortly after 4p.m. CST and traffic was reduced to one lane for westbound motorists around the Pilot Butte turn off for several hours as investigators examined the scene.
