P.E.I. Provincial Correctional Centre's drinking water problems are over

The problems with the drinking water at P.E.I.'s Provincial Correctional Centre are now over.

Work was recently completed to connect the facility to Charlottetown's municipal water service.

Testing this summer revealed unsafe levels of arsenic and uranium in the groundwater at the centre, which had been using two wells.

Inmates and staff had been using bottled water for drinking and food preparation for several months.

Arsenic and uranium occur naturally in groundwater, but levels found at the jail were slightly higher than the national health guidelines for consumption.
