Teen rescued from swamped lobster boat

Four Islanders including one teenage girl aboard a fishing boat that got swamped Saturday in Malpeque Harbour are grateful the Canadian Coast Guard rescued them.

The Coast Guard and Kensington Fire Department, using a zodiac boat, rescued three men and one girl Saturday. No injuries were reported during the incident, but they were cold and checked for hypothermia

Treina Lockhart, 13, has a once in a lifetime survival story to tell.

"And then all of a sudden, the waves pushed us and turned us around and we got stuck on the bottom," she told CBC News Sunday.

At about 3 p.m. Saturday the boat that Treina, her dad and two other men were on got stuck on a sandbar in Malpeque Harbour.

Strong winds and waves crashed down on the foursome for almost two hours before they were finally rescued.

Luckily, Treina had some special training.

"I was in Cubs and Scouts and they bring in the Coast Guard and they come and talk to us about having hypothermia and how to take care of it and how to keep yourself warm and not to panic because that's the worst thing that could happen," she said.

From the wharf, lobster fisherman Matthew Wall saw the boat run aground on a sandbar and he alerted the Coast Guard.

He then took his boat to be near the stranded vessel.

Wall said the harbour should be dredged more often for the safety of fishermen.

"It's a nasty spot to try to get in and out no matter what the tide is," he said.

"The problem is they'll dredge it and we could get a storm the next week, so it's one of those things when you need it, you need it quick."

Wall said it's unclear whether the swamped boat, named the Supersaver, will make it out to sea again.

The boat is still stuck on the sandbar.
