Suspect caught red-handed during tire-slashing spree

Charlottetown police have arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with a tire-slashing spree that damaged 15 vehicles throughout the city over the weekend.

Police said the tires were slashed Friday afternoon and early Sunday morning on University Avenue between Kent and Fitzroy streets.

Deputy Chief of Police Gary McGuigan said the man was actually caught red-handed on Sunday by one of the vehicles owners.

"He was actually sitting in his vehicle unbeknownst to the accused at the time and observed him walking up to the vehicle and slashing the tires. So at that time he was able to jump out of the vehicle, surprise the accused, and he was able to apprehend him until police arrived," he said.

"He wrestled him to the ground, held him there, called police, and waited for police to come."

McGuigan said he doesnt recommend people taking the law into their own hands.

Dennis Joseph OBrien has been charged with mischief and 15 counts of damaging to property.

He will appear in court on June 27.
