Some Islanders were left disappointed by the news of Selena Gomez cancelling her tour, and the subsequent cancellation of Atlantic Fest 2016.

Laura Downey was planning to take her two teenage daughters, aged 10 and 15, to the concert and for a shopping weekend in Moncton.

"They are very disappointed that the show has been cancelled as it was their major event for the summer and it would have been their first real concert event," she said in an email to CBC News.

Downey said she's not upset because the promotions company promised full refunds.

"I think an individual's health, emotional or physical, is more important than entertainment," she said.

"Obviously there are serious issues going on for them to cancel the rest of her world tour as there are hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more, to be lost in doing so."

Downey and her daughters still plan to go to Moncton for the shopping portion of their trip.

'The nature of the beast'

Jacqueline Skinner, operations coordinator for Target Tours, a Maritime group tour operator that was sending a coach bus from P.E.I. to Moncton for the show, said there were about 45 people signed up for the tour.

"We were definitely disappointed. It means one less bus leaving for us and it also means a great disappointment for our clients."

Skinner said Target Tourscontacted their clients right away, telling them they would be getting full refunds.

"With concerts, it's sort of the nature of the beast. You never really know what's going to happen, whether it's a weather event or the artist or what have you. They are unpredictable."

Skinner said the cancellation is a hit to the business, but won't ruin their fall season.

'Grin and bear it'

Bray Schurman, a DJ from Summerside currently going to school in Halifax, was scheduled to play a 30 to 45 minute set before Flo Rida took the stage in Moncton.

Schurman, who goes by the DJ nameSuffluzy, found out about the cancellation through a friend who sent him a photo of a tweet.

It would have been his biggest gig yet.

"When I was approached for this gig, I'd be used to playing for maybe 20 to 200 people, that's all I've ever done. And then to hear the promoter ... telling me there will be 20,000 people there, how could I turn this gig down? It was pretty exciting to hear," he said.

"It would have been really cool. I was definitely looking forward to it. You know, I have toroll with the punches, and it's something you just deal with, I guess. Nothing you can really do about it, especially when it's her health in question, so you know, just grin and bear it."
