PEI Right to Life looks to Summerside as clinic opens

PEI Right to Life isturning itsfocus on Summerside, P.E.I..

The province announced last month that a clinic would open in the community offering abortions, among other services.

The anti-abortion group held a public demonstration in Charlottetown on Sunday, lining up with signs along University Avenue in front of the school.TheUniversity of Prince Edward IslandCanadian Catholic Students' Association also participated.

Outreach and education

Nicole Dupuis, the executive director for Right to Life, said the group will plan more such demonstrations in Summerside.

"Going forward with the abortion clinic coming to Summerside, our goals are to create new initiatives, targeting specifically Summerside, for public outreach, education and pregnancy support," she said.

"Currently we are already doing presentations in and around the Summerside area. When abortion does come to Summerside, we plan to do more public outreach, such as LifeChain in Summerside."

First time in 35 years

The move to bring abortion services to the Island was due to pressure from abortion rights activists, who said they would file a lawsuit against the provincial government if access was not providedon the Island.

This will be the first time abortion services will be offered on the Island in almost 35 years.

Dupuissaid the group's focus is education.

"We're just here to support those who would like to choose something other than abortion."
