Post private nursing home inspections online, says Crane

Inspection reports from private nursing homes on P.E.I. should be posted online, says independent MLA Olive Crane.

Minister of Health Doug Currie says he's open to increasing transparency

Inspection reports from private nursing homes on P.E.I. should be posted online, says independent MLA Olive Crane.

Crane says she's heard from a number of Island families concerned about the care a family member is receiving in a private nursing home.

According to Crane, some families feel the concerns they raise with the facilities aren't always acted upon in a timely manner.

"By making inspections public and putting them online, or advertising them in the newspaper, in the media, then people could go in and see. And what I believe it would do, it would force private sector facilities to take all issues seriously and to improve them in a very quick time period," Crane said.

Crane says making the reports public would also help families in choosing a facility for a family member.

Health Minister DougCurrieagrees and says his department will work toward getting the reports online.

He says in the past some nursing homes have been put on provisional licences because of issues identified during inspections.
