Wanted: New plan for soon-to-be defunct seniors care home

The P.E.I. government is looking for someone to take over the Stewart Memorial Home in Tyne Valley.

The building, formerly a hospital, was converted to a seniors care home in 2013, but construction started on a new home in the summer. With no other provincial departments interested in taking it over, the building is now deemed to be surplus.

The tender for proposals is going to non-profit groups first. A spokesperson from the Department of Infrastructure said the province wants the building to be developed to benefit the whole community.

If there is no interest from non-profits, the province will open up the process to other groups. Tenders are being accepted until noon on March 1.

New manors are being built in both Tyne Valley and Montague. The province says there is no plan for the old Montague manor yet.
