Summerside woman arrested with stroller of stolen meat

A 31-year-old woman from the Summerside, P.E.I., area was arrested after police said she left a local grocery store with a stroller full of stolen meat products.

"Just various meat," said D/Sgt. Ron MacLean with Summerside Police. "Perhaps about $300 in value."

The woman also had a child with her at the time of the theft.

Police received the call around 2:45 p.m. Monday, and apprehended the woman and the stroller a short time later. The child was still with her, but she only had some of the meat with her.

MacLean said he's not sure where the rest of the meat went, but police were only able to recover some of the stolen goods.

Attempted to give false name, say police

The woman attempted to give police a false name, said MacLean, but it didn't work out very well for her.

"Another officer that knew her personally arrived on the scene and confirmed who she actually was," he said.

Woman had child with her

MacLean said it isn't often that police receive calls about people committing crimes while they have children with them.

"It has happened before, but it's not a common occurrence in Summerside," he said.

The woman has been charged with theft under $5,000 and obstruction by providing police with a false name.

She will appear in court at a later date.
