Voter turnout down in Summerside-Wilmot byelection

Fewer votes were cast in Summerside-Wilmot Monday night than in the May 2015 general election.

The total number of votes cast was 2,311, down from 2,878 last spring. That's 20 per cent fewer voters.

Therewere3,800 people registered to vote in the district, meaning voter turnout was 60 per cent.

Despite the smaller number of voters, the Liberals increased their margin of victory considerably. Liberal Chris Palmer won by 258 votes. Liberal Janice Sherry, who resigned the seat in August, won by just 30 votes in 2015.

Another big winner was the Green Party. It saw its number of the votes go up almost 80 per cent, to 506.
