Stratford searches for stories behind soldiers

The Town of Stratford is looking for the public's help to find information on two local veterans.

Stratford's war memorial lists dozens of men and womenwho served in the first and second world wars and the Korean Conflict.

But there are two namesthat remain a bit of a mystery.

And now the town is looking for any information on their connection to Stratford.

"People have recommended that they be added to the monument, but we don't have a lot of detail on them," said Diane Griffin,chair of Stratford's planning, development and heritage committee.

Daniel WilliamMcInnisand JohnMacRaewere both were soldiers in the Second World War, she said.

MacRae's brother, Donald died in the Second World War, but she said the town doesn't know much more than that.

"What we would like to know is, 'was he a resident of Stratford?' and a little bit more about his history," said Griffin.

As for McInnis, Griffin said he died at war when he was 25-years-old, but she doesn't know how his connection to Stratford.

The more details the town has on veterans, the better, she said.

Their stories are used on banners and posters.

And the town is also working on an upcoming book about Stratford soldiers.

"If we don't get the information now, we're at risk of never getting it and I guess the world will go on," said Griffin.

"The point is, these are people who served our country and we could like to know as much as we can and have their records as complete as the records for all the others."

Anyone who thinks they may have information should contact town hall.
