A five-unit townhouse proposed for Stratford Road is on hold as council looks into issues raised by residents.

The property on Stratford Road, next to the convenience store at 70 Stratford Road, is currently zoned to build two duplexes. The developer would like to build a five-unit townhouse.

But people who live in the Stratford Road area are concerned that a new development would mean more traffic on an already busy road.

They say a stormwater system that supports the area doesn't function properly, and worry about the impact from more residential development, the town says.

It may not have anything to do with development, but we also need to make sure development doesn't do anything to make it worse.- Stratford CAO Robert Hughes

"Residents have indicated that they have had problems and are having problems with stormwater so we need to figure out what is wrong there," said Stratford CAO Robert Hughes.

"It may not have anything to do with development, but we also need to make sure development doesn't do anything to make it worse, and if possible, help to fix it."

The province owns the roads and the stormwater system, Hughes said, so officials plan to meet with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure for clarity on both concerns.

The comments came about while a rezoning application for the proposed development was being read at this month's council meeting.

A decision will be made public at the next meeting, scheduled for Sept. 14.

Corrections

  • A previous version of this story stated incorrectly the property is at 29 Stratford Road. In fact, the property is at a different location on Stratford Road, but has not yet been assigned a street number.
