Love softball? This might be the opportunity for you

Some of the best young women's fastpitch players from across the country will be taking part in a national championship in Charlottetown next month and organizers are looking for volunteers who love the game.

The 2016 U18 Women's Canadian Fast Pitch Championship takes place August 8 to 14 at Central Field.

From bat handlers and 50/50 ticket sellers to game announcers and ball chasers, the call is going out for volunteers to help make the event a success.

"Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet people, to have lots of fun," said Carol Mayne, chair of the host committee.

"You see people you maybe haven't seen in a long time, you meet new friends, you meet people that you're volunteering with, [and] it provides an opportunity to certainly see some excellent quality softball."

150 volunteers needed

She said the committee is looking for roughly 150 volunteers, and has a ways to go before reaching that goal.

"What I've found in the past is that people don't like to make plans too far out on P.E.I., so as a result we have to kind of time it closer to the event," Mayne said.

"We need different types of people. We're looking for scorekeepers, statisticians, announcers, people to actually operate the scoreboard."

Twenty-one teams from across the country will be participating, making it one of the largest national championships Charlottetown has ever hosted. These are also the championships prior to the Canada Games.

"So it's an opportunity for teams to come here to have players be looked at for potential participation in the Canada Games team next year," Mayne said.
