Bad weather prompts extension of school review comment deadline

The deadline to submit comments on P.E.I.'s school review has been extended.

The original deadline was midnight Nov. 30, but with extensive power outages in eastern P.E.I., school reorganization project manager Bob Andrews decided to give people extra time.

'We'll probably entertain some input, you know, due to the weather conditions, for the next couple of days," said Andrews.

"After that, the director of the public school's branch, Parker [Grimmer] and I will be looking at all of that input, all of the data that we've collected."

Recommendations expected in January

That input includes hundreds of submissions through the online form, emails, individual meetings and public presentations.

The province embarked on the school review in September. It is meant to deal with an imbalance in school utilization. Many schools are underutilized, while others are overcrowded. The review is expected to lead to some rezoning, and potentially some school closures.

Andrews says he will release his recommendations in early January, and then there will be 60-day comment period.
