Island RCMP were busy dealing with at least three impaired driving charges before the long weekend even got underway last Thursday, police said in written releases Monday.

The first incident was at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday when East Prince RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision on Route 20 in Seaview, P.E.I.

Breath tests taken from one driver who showed signs of impairment were nearly twice the legal limit, police said. A 30-year-old Summerside man is scheduled to appear in Summerside Provincial Court in August.

At 3:30 p.m., Kings District RCMPsaid they observed a vehicle driving erratically on Route 4 near Glenfanning.

Police arrested the 49-year-old male driver from Millview for impaired driving, saying his breath samples indicated his blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit. He's scheduled to appear in court in Georgetown at a later date.

'In and out of a ditch'

At about 9 p.m. East Prince RCMP received two complaints of a smaller-model red car driving fast and erratically, "in and out of a ditch, and swerving all over the road near Maple Street in Wellington," according to a release.

Police located the car and arrested a 25-year-old year old man from Abrams Village for impaired driving his breath samples were twice the legal limit, they said.

The car was not registered or insured and did not have a proper license plate, police said, and was towed away. The driver is scheduled to appear in Summerside Provincial Court in October.

The East Prince RCMP noted they charged three people with impaired driving in fewer than 24 hours, and thanked the public for their diligence in the fight against impaired driving.
