P.E.I. Opposition slams progress on carbon tax, climate plan

P.E.I. Opposition Leader Jamie Fox expressed displeasure Friday with progress made on carbon pricing and climate change at first ministers meetingsheld Thursday in Vancouver.

Canada's first ministers conference in Vancouver resulted in an agreement to work together to transition to a lower-carbon future that will include putting a price on carbon use. The provinces set up several working groups for further study over the next six months, and agreed to meet again in the late fall.

"The time has come for theMacLauchlangovernment to share its carbon pricing plans with Islanders," Fox said in a written release.

"In the last three months the Premier has flown to Paris, Ottawa and Vancouver about climate issues and the only real information that's been shared with the public is the Premier's belief that Islanders need to take shorter showers," Fox added.

"Islanders need a bit more to go on than that."

Carbon taxes are typically levied on fuels and other greenhouse gas sources such as gasoline, diesel, propane and furnace oil.

"All other Atlantic premiers have weighed in yet ours continues to avoid sharing any details," Fox said.

"Islanders could be forgiven for thinking that this government has no plan, no costs, and no clue on a new carbon tax for Islanders."
