Mi'kmaq building in downtown Charlottetown gets business support

The new waterfront building being proposed by the Mi'kmaq Confederacy is getting the support of the Charlottetown business community.

Both Downtown Charlottetown Inc. and the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce spoke at a public planning meeting Tuesday night regarding the application.

Both groups were strongly in favour of the project, saying it would be good for economic development and increase tourism.

The proposed three-storey building would sit at the corner of Stan MacPherson Way and Water Street. It would house office space, an Aboriginal Friendship Centre, a gift shop and a car rental service.

The car rental service has been a stumbling block for the project. It would require a zoning change, and that application was already refused once by council.

Council will give it a look again at its next meeting.
