P.E.I. Marathon met with good weather, 'uplifting' crowds

The streets of downtown Charlottetown were lined with people Sundaymorning, cheering on about 2,800runners and walkersat the finish line of the 13th annual Prince Edward Island Marathon.

Stan Chaisson won the marathon in fine weather with some high cloud and a high that eventually hit14 C, finishing in twohours and 41 minutes. Last year, runners suffered through snow.

Jen Nicholson won the women's marathon in threehours and fourminutes.

Both Chaisson and Nicholson hold the course record already, though neither broke it this year.

People of all ages were out, doing everything from the 5-kwalk to the full marathon, helped along by about 300 volunteers.

Event draws tourists

Halifax'sMatthew Moi, whoran the half marathon, said he was amazed by the number of people out cheering on the runners.

"Itwas actually pretty fantastic coming into the finish line," he said. "There were a lot of people lining both sides of the race track, and it was very uplifting."

Lori Rossi from Edmonton ran the half-marathon with a group of friends who enjoy combining exercise with sightseeing in Canada.

"We try and walk the town as much as we can for the rest of the day just to keep our legs moving. So we'll do a lot of sightseeing."
