The creators of a new web series are hoping to build a different kind of history on the Island.

Sort of like Anne of Green Gables, says producer Renee Laprise, except about witches.

"When people come here they think Anne is real, and the idea is to give the Island that kind of history, like a kind of magical history," she said. "I think there probably is a magical history that we haven't uncovered yet."

Laprise and Patti Larsen created the Lovely Witches Club, a paranormal series about a young filmmaker who's hired to make a documentary about the so-called witches of Prince Edward Island.

They received more than $100,000 from Telefilm to make the series, which they expect to be seven episodes at about 11 minutes each.

Casting begins Wednesday, shooting begins in August and they hope to have the first episode air Jan. 1.

The series will be shot at various locations across P.E.I., including Basin Head where one of the characters has a has a food truck called the singing sandwich and Upstreet Brewery. Laprise said they are also looking for a non-franchised coffee shop location.

The idea for the series came about as Laprise and Larsen were thinking of a fun way for women on P.E.I. to express their creativity.

"We did a witches ball with the Haviland Club last year which was sold out and was fantastic," Laprise said. "And then Telefilm put out the notice that their micro-budget program would actually be including web series. So we decided to do a series for Lovely Witches Club and we got it."

The creators are planning to launch the new series with another witches ball on New Year's Eve.
