Lennox Island band prepares for election

People with theLennoxIsland First Nation will go to the polls later this spring.

• Mary Moore-Phillips wins Lennox Island byelection for off-reserve councillor

A nomination meeting is scheduled for April 30 at the school on Lennox Island from 5 to 7 p.m.

Nominations will be accepted for the position of chief, two on-reserve councillors and one off-reserve councillor. Chief Matilda Ramjattan saidthe election will likely follow in early June.

The last election was held in 2013, when 293 ballots were cast. Matilda Ramjattan beat then-chief Darlene Bernard in a 146 to117 vote, while Leslie Labobe took 29 votes for chief. Current on-reserve councillors are Stevie Bernard and Debbie Bernard.Chris Sapier won the spot ofoff-reserve councillor, but moved back to the reserve, so a by-election was held and Mary Moore-Phillips wonthe post.

About 450 people call Lennox Island home, according to the band's website.
