Former P.E.I. RCMP officer Jeffrey Rae Gillis faces 12 weapons charges

A former RCMP constable is facing 12 weapons related charges after more than 70 firearms were seized from his P.E.I. home last winter, says the director of Nova Scotia's Independent Serious Incident Response Team.

Jeffrey Rae Gillis, 43, was charged on Aug. 5 and is expected to appear in Provincial Court in Charlottetown on Aug. 15.

SiRT began its investigation in February after Charlottetown police discovered the firearms while responding to an alleged incident at Gillis's home in Charlottetown while he was off duty.

Charlottetown police and the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team "significantly assisted" the investigation, said SiRT director Ron MacDonald in a news release.

On Thursday, he released his report, which resulted in the following charges against Gillis:

• Unlawful storage of firearms.
• Possession of firearms obtained by an offence.
• Unlawful possession of firearms.
• Unlawful possession of prohibited firearms together with ammunition.
• Unlawful possession of restricted firearms together with ammunition.
• Unlawful possession of prohibited weapons.
• Five counts of filing false reports with a peace officer about the destruction of firearms.
• Breach of trust.

RCMP in P.E.I. say Gillis voluntarily retired from the force in February.
