Island-based gaming company icejam receives $1M loan from ACOA

Island-based mobile gaming company icejam is getting a $1 million boost from the federal government to launch its first game.

The $1 million comes in the form of a loan from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The company will also receive $53,625 from Skills PEI for graduate mentorship, and labour rebates from the provincial government over the next five years.

The new game is called Qurius, and is described in a news release as "the world's first Connected Reality experience." This means that if, for example, it's raining in the real world, the player will also experience rain within the game.

"icejam is an excellent example of a homegrown Prince Edward Island company on the cutting edge of technology," said P.E.I.Minister of Economic Development and Tourism Heath MacDonald in a news release.

"It is further proof that even in our small province, ambition and entrepreneurial spirit can lead to big things. icejam's tremendous success proves what Island companies can achieve in a worldwide market."
