Special sale hopes to move black and white cats

Black and white cats have been hard to adopt lately at the PEI Humane Society (Natalia Goodwin)

You may want to throw on a tuxedo to match the sale going on at the PEI Humane Society Wednesday.

The adoption fee for black and white cats is being reduced from $145 to $25. Included in that price is vaccinations, spay or neutering, health checks with fleaand wormtreatments, a microchip and 30days of pet insurance.

The deal is being offered to help find homes for seven cats, said development director Jennifer Harkness.

Jennifer Harkness with the Humane Society said the sale is to encourage adoptions by making the fee lower. (Natalia Goodwin)

"We just have a number of black and white cats up for adoption right now, and some of them have been on the floor for quite a long time, we're talking March, so that's 70 to 90 days. "

The cat population at the shelter is getting crowded with more than 30cats. The sheltercan physically fit more, but Harkness said there is more to think about than just space.

"It's a model we adopted a few years ago, it's called capacity for care, so it's less about the definition about physical space and more about the capacity for care," she said.

'It's the black and white cats'

"So we're looking at, can we meet the individual needs for each cat in the shelter. And sometimes when we have too many cats, they start to get stressed, they can get sick, those kinds of things, we also have to prepare for emergencies," she explained.

Harkness said there is no real explanation for the large numberof black and white cats, it just happens from time to time.

"What happens is some groups of cats, when they're all coming in together, tend to be ignored, so right now it's the black and white cats. It could be the orange cats, it could be the tabbycats if there was a large group of them," she said.

"So if a potential adopter is coming into the shelter, they're looking for a new cat to bring into their home and there'sfive cats that look exactly the same, they can kind of get lost in the background because the one that looks a little different let's say the grey tabbyis really standing out," she said.

There are some interesting stories among those up for the special adoption. There's Lester who was found in a lobster trap. And then, Harkness says there aretwo cats who will make you believe in love.

"There`s a little girlfriend, boyfriend duo Norwin and Norma. They came in together with two kittens, theirkittens were adopted and they've really bonded with each other, and we want to see them get adopted, so if anyone's looking for a little love couple in their house, they would be perfect."

The sale is running from 11-5:30 and all regular adoption rules apply.
