Halloween trick on wife becomes treat for travellers on this P.E.I. route

When Kenny Conohan set up a Halloween display in front of his home on a busy P.E.I. road a couple of weeks ago, he didn't expect the overwhelming reaction it has been receiving from commuters,children on school buses and othersdoing a double-take as they pass by.

"It started off as a prank on my wife, just to get a reaction out of her, and it just snowballed from there," he said.

The display,on Route 2 between Charlottetown and Hunter River, features two plastic skeletons Conohan bought at Walmart.

What makes it interesting is the positions he puts them in, changing it up every couple of days.

They've been on a snowmobile, with one driving and one holding on for dear life on the back. They've had their feet up on coolers as they enjoy a drink beside a tent. They've been fishing from a canoe. One even ran over the other with a snowblower, leaving bones scattered across the lawn.

They've garnered a lot of comments on social media, such as:

• "The canoe today had me in tears, and snowblower last week! So good!"
• "Me and my daughter love seeing what they set up. She said the kids on the school bus every morning are all talking about it. Kudos to them!"
• "How great to do this!!! If just one person going by is having a bad day, it can make a difference in a positive way."

A spooky display has people who pass through the P.E.I. community of Brookfield laughing and wondering what will come next. And Kenny Conohan couldn't be happier.

Conohan said he's gotten"overwhelming" support, though he added: "I wasn't out for a reaction other than the one that I get from from my wife."

He and his 13-year-old son go out after dark to switch up the display so that nobody sees the work in progress.

"I want it to be a surprise the next morning," he said.

Conohan said he loved Halloween as a kid, and would regularly come home with two pillowcases full of candy. Living just off the highway, though, he doesn't get many trick-or-treaters at his house.

He's glad to be finding a way tomake people smile as the big day approaches, including his wifeAnita, who never knows what the skeletons will be up to next.

"She knows I can be a little silly sometimes," Conohan said, adding: "She's on board now."
