P.E.I. to invest in more low-income housing

The provincial and federal governments will provide rent supplements to 75 more homes for low-income Islanders over the next three years.

Charlottetown MP Sean Casey said $1.35 million will be invested by both levels of government to benefit low-income Islanders, including those with disabilities and mental health issues.

"Rental assistance programs in Prince Edward Island give low-income households more options," Casey said.

"They are flexible, giving Islanders the choice of where they want to live, and the cash assistance helps with housing costs."

P.E.I.Family and Human ServicesMinisterTina Mundysaid the government recognizes there are gaps for specific groups of the population in need of affordable housing, including people with disabilities or mental health and addictions illnesses.

"Rent supplements are an excellent way to offer this support because they provide timely access to existing units across the province," she said.
