Roads damaged, power cut for hundreds in weekend storms

Thunder and lightning storms along with rain on the weekend caused some damage to roads in Prince Edward Island, as well as several power outages.

In Montague, floodwater caused severe damage from Brook Street down to the river. A part of Patrick Street was also affected. Some Montague residents reported flooded basements, town officials said.

Town crews are now assessing what work will need to done.

The town's sewer system managed to handle 100,000 gallons of water in just a few hours Sunday afternoon, officials added.

Hundreds lost power

About 500 to 600 Islanders lost electricity Saturday night, according to Maritime Electric.

"On Saturday night we were starting to get calls around eight o'clock at night that there was power out at several locations," said Maritime Electric's Kim Griffin.

Kensington, Darnley, Cape Traverse, O'Leary, Malpeque, North Tryon, Borden-Carleton and Victoria-By-the-Sea were all affected, Griffin said.

Three crews were dispatched to central and western P.E.I., and had to replace eight to 10 transformers as well as dozens of fuses. They worked through the night until they were able to restore power to everyone by early Sunday morning.

"We're not sure exactly the number of strikes," said Griffin.

Other road damage

"King's County we had just moderate damage," said Stephen Szwarc, assistant director of the maintenance division of P.E.I.'s Department of Transportation.

"We had four areas where there were shoulder washouts." Crews have managed to repair them already, Szwarc said.
