Father of Fort McMurray fire evacuee loses P.E.I. home to fire

Less than two months after fleeing the wildfires in Fort McMurray, an Island man is now dealing with the loss of his fathers home on P.E.I.

Couple, two adult children survive blaze, but dog dies 'a hero'

Less than two months after fleeing the wildfires in Fort McMurray, an Island man is now dealing with the loss of his father's home on P.E.I.

Kris Cudmore, who has moved back into his home in Fort McMurray, has started a GoFundMe page for his father, whose house on Spruce Court in Brackley Beach burned down early Saturday morning.

Cudmore said Abby, the family dog,alerted his father at 5 a.m. the morning of the fire.The house was engulfed in flames, but his father was able to get his wife and two adult children out alive.

The doghowever, did not survive.

Dog 'died a hero'

"She died a hero," Cudmore wrote on the GoFundMe page.

The family escaped with only the clothes they were wearing. The Canadian Red Cross is assisting all four with emergency lodging, food, clothing and personal-care kits.

The family declined an interview request,but Cudmore said on the GoFundMe page that his father has lost everything.

"Having just gone through the fire in Fort McMurray and knowing the devastation this causes I can't stand to know my dad is now going through this. Any help will be greatly appreciated during this tough time."

Another fire in Charlottetown

It was the second fire in the area on the Canada Day weekend.

In Charlottetown on Friday, a man and woman were displaced by a fire that damaged their apartment in the annex of a house at 24 Gerald Street. The two roommates are staying with friends, and the Red Cross arranged emergency purchases of clothing and food.
