A memorial ceremony is being held in Miscouche, P.E.I., Saturday afternoon to honour a volunteer firefighter who died a year ago in a car crash.

Capt.Mike Gallant, 51, was returning to work after an emergency call with the department May 14, 2015, when he was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Kensington.

At around 1 p.m. Saturday at the Miscouche Fire Department, the number 16 will be retired and Gallant's old firefighting gear will be displayedin a memorial cabinet.

"When we lose one of our own during a line of duty death, it's very heartbreaking," said Miscouche Fire Department Chief Jason Woodbury.

"It's also overwhelming, so it's appropriate for us to always remember that number 16 and retire it from the service of the Miscouche Fire Department."
