Who is running for town council in Cornwall

Unlike other municipalities, Cornwall doesn't run on the traditional ward system.

Rather, Cornwall has an open ward election where the six candidates with the most votes overall will form government.

In the pastfour municipal elections, there's been over 3,000 registered voters in the town. This time around voters will be able to cast their ballot for one of eleven candidates running in Cornwall.

Here are the candidates registered with Elections P.E.I. to run for council for the 2018 election on Nov. 5.

Corey Frizzell

Why are you running for council?

I have spent over 30 years in Cornwall.I understand this is a very important time for the town.With the realignment of the Trans Canada Highway, Cornwall is about to undergo a significant period of change. I am running to ensure that council navigates this transition period efficiently.

What is your number one concern in your town?

My number one concern is for the residents of Cornwall: our seniors, our young people, our families and residents.

Council needs to do a better job engaging, communicating and providing services to our residents because they are our greatest resource and council is here to serve them.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

Cornwall needs to look at our minor sports organizations Ramblers, Cougars, Timberwolves and LaCrosseas our partners. So if I am elected, I am going to table a resolution to have field rental costs waived for these four organizations during their games and practices.

Cory Stevenson

Why are you running for council?

This is a pivotal election for Cornwall one that will elect individuals to progressively guide this town through the highway realignment process and properly manage the current growth of Cornwall. I can offer a fresh perspective and work within a council team to move Cornwall forward.

What is your number one concern in your town?

Linked together issue here. We need more sidewalks and crosswalks. That being said, we need to ensure resident safety at the same time need increased law enforcement. Both aspects go hand in hand. With increased mobility in the town, residential and commercial components will continue to grow.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

I would change (improve) resident feedback and engagement process to allow for regular town halls for residents to come and offer their continued feedback and suggestions as we move forward as a town.

Elaine Barnes

Elaine Barnes is an incumbent.

Why are you running for council?

I am running for council because I love my community and I want to be involved in making it even better. I want to ensure that residents concerns are heard and brought forward.

What is your number one concern in your town?

My number one concern is safety. We have youth currently crossing a highway to get home from the youth centre after dark. More sidewalks are needed, reduced speed.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

I would change the use of the Cornwall Civic Centre back to a community centre as it was designed andbuild a child care centre. There is a need for child care/after school care andwe can do a much better job fulfilling that need for residents. Community programs at the civic centre would be welcome.

Gary Ramsay

Why are you running for council?

I have been a resident of the town of Cornwall for over 40 years and I care about the community.

What is your number oneconcernin your town?

My number one concern is increased not enough traffic and speeding enforcement.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

Greater access to affordable housing options for Cornwall seniors.

Irene Dawson

Irene Dawson is an incumbent.

Why are you running for council?

To be part of the team that continues to encourage development and growth in the town, adding to the quality of life for our residents.

What is your number one concern in your town?

To continue sustainable development and the necessary supportive infrastructure that enables such development.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

To encourage greater interest and involvement with and from our residents to build a safe, affordable environment for all of us.

Jill MacIsaac

Why are you running forcouncil?

My career allows me to interact with residents on a daily basis and being on council allows me to bring residence concerns forward.

What is your number oneconcernin your town?

My number one concern is ensuring quality of life to our most vulnerable residents youth and seniors.

What is the one thing youwouldchange in your town?

Improving on affordable housing and transit will encourage growth within our town.

Judy Herlihy

Why are you running for council?

I want to see a more transparent council with a fundamental tenet of engagement and communication with residents. An example of when this wasn't the caseis the Cornwall Bypass. Prior to final decisions, not enough information was shared with the community in terms of location, designor impact.

What is your number one concern in your town?

Cornwall is currently experiencing significant development. My largest concern is ensuring we have a long term plan in place for our services in order to keep up with this growth. That includes water and sewer, space in our schoolsand amenities such as restaurants, shopping and transit.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

In speaking with almost 500 residents over the past two months, speeding and safety come up more than any other issue. I would like to revisit our agreement with the RCMP to see how together we could improve the service offering Cornwall is getting for its policing budget.

Marlene Hunt

Why are you running for council?

I was elected for two terms as town councillor in Cornwall, 2007-2014. I'm putting my name forward again as I enjoy serving my community. All residents should be treated fairly and with respect. I will do that.

What is your number oneconcern in your town?

My number one concern is safety of residents in Cornwall. I would work with council to improve infrastructure, sidewalks, lighted crosswalksand improve policing to address our number one crime: cars speeding through all our streets. Beautification and the environment are also important.

What is the one thingyouwould change in your town?

I would like to reduce the fee structure for use of our sporting venues. We need to compete with other towns and a lot of public tax money built the venues. It's important people can afford to use them.

Parker Beer

Why are you running for council?

I've lived here all my life. I was on three times before and I'm retired now so I just thought I'd put something back into the community.

What is your number one concern in your town?

There's quite a few of them. Some of them might work and some of them now. I don't like to commit myself to something that might not happen. Traffic. Nothing really serious just a lot of little things.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

We'll get the bypass through here and we'll see what happens when that's done and what we'll do with our main street. There's quite a bit of building going on now.

Peter Meggs

Peter Meggs is an incumbent.

Why are you running for council?

This is an exciting time in the Town of Cornwall, with great potential for growth and development. I'd like to use my experience on town council to help facilitate those changes.

What is your number one concern in your town?

Traffic safety is the number one concern I hear from residents.

What is the one thing you would change in your town?

I'd like to see our main street become more pedestrian-friendly and bicycle-friendly, and more accommodating for retail and residential opportunities.

Shane McGuigan

Why are you running for council?

Having grown up in the Town of Cornwall, I have a genuine interest in the viability and sustainability of the town. I believe all residents are deserving of a safe community, great services and transparent leadership and I am committed to working for the people to ensure that.

What is your number oneconcern in your town?

My number one concern for our residents is pedestrian safety.

What is the one thing you wouldchange in your town?

I would like to see all residents of the town have free access to the walking track at the APM Centre to promote health and wellness.
