What many consider to be the ultimate comfort food will be taken to a whole new level on Sunday during the 6th annual Great Island Grilled Cheese Challenge.

Chefs from across the Island have been working on their creations, which in the past have included a pizza-themed grilled cheese, a bacon-and-egg grilled cheese and others sweeter ingredients that could be served as dessert.

The only criteria is that it must contain 60 per cent cheese, Papa Joe's chef Irwin MacKinnon said on CBC's Mainstreet.

"It is still a grilled cheese sandwich, but they're a little bit outside the box from your two slices of bread and slice of cheese type thing," he said. "A little more interesting."

The sandwiches are judged on presentation and taste, MacKinnon said. There is also a People's Choice Award based on votes from the public.

The event, part of the annual Fall Flavours Festival, takes place Sunday Sept. 25 from 12-2p.m. Tickets are available at the door or online at the Fall Flavours site.
