P.E.I. cheese takes top spot at World Cheese Awards

They like it, they really like it! Cheese from Prince Edward Island has once again taken top awards in a major competition that included more than 2,600 cheesesfrom 33 countries.

Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar, made by Cows Creamery on PEI, won SuperGold at the World Cheese Awards at the 28th annual BBC Good Food Show Winter that took place in Birmingham, England from Nov. 26 to 28.

It was given top marks in the Vintage Cheddar category and named one of the top 16 cheeses in the world.

"To receive this award is incredible," said Cows cheesemaker Armand Bernard. "It's a real honour to have won World's Best Vintage Cheddar, especially when you consider the number of entries coming from all over the world."

Cows says its clothbound cheddar is made with Island dairy milk, wrapped in cheesecloth and aged for 12 to 18 months under carefully-monitored temperature and humidity.

The very top award went to a blue cheese calledBath Blue from Bath Soft Cheese in England.
