Former teacher arrested in connection with 40-year-old sexual assaults

A 79-year-old man was arrested in Charlottetown and charged for allegedly sexually assaulting two young boys 40 years ago.

A 79-year-old was arrested in Charlottetownand charged for allegedly sexually assaulting two young boys 40 years ago.

The man was an elementary school/ primaryteacher who travelled between Toronto and Prince Edward Island between the late 1960s and the early 1980s, said Toronto police in a news release.

He is accused ofsexually assaulting two students during school hours and after schoolbetween September 1978and June 1979, but police aren't saying what schoolthe boys went to.

Police said in the releasethe boys were between nine and 10 years old at the time of the assaults.

The man has been charged withtwo counts of indecent assault on a male, said police.

Charlottetown police worked together police in Toronto to make the arrest.

"The world has become more transient," said Charlottetown Deputy Chief Brad MacConnell.

"It's not uncommon for people to go from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, so it's very important that we support each other in dealing with these types of incidents."

MacConnell said working on investigations with police services across other provinces has become more common.

Officers with Toronto police travelled to the Island after the arrest, and the man is now in their custody.
