Woman injured after car knocks her over, drives away

Police are looking for more information about a car that hit a pedestrian near the Charlottetown Mall Tuesday morning.

An 18-year-old woman was at the crosswalk on Towers Road at about 8:45 a.m., next to the mall parking lot, when she was struck and knocked to the ground.

The car stopped, but then drove off when the woman started to get up.

Charlottetown policeCst.Ron Kennedy said the womansuffered a fractured ankle as well as some minor scrapes and bruises, but nothing life-threatening. She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospitalwhere she was treated and released.

The vehicle is described as a dark sedan, possibly a Honda Civic, with silver trim.

Police would like to speak with any witnesses. Kennedy said police are also hopeful the driver will come forward.

He said police onlyget reports ofhit-and-run accidents a few times a year.

"For the most part, Islanders are really, really good to stop and check on the well-being of people they hit. Sometimes people panic and come to the police at a later date to report them," he said.

"For the most part, we don't have a whole lot. Unfortunately it does happen periodically."
