The City of Charlottetown is looking to stitch together its patchwork of bicycle routes.

Coun. Mike Duffy, chair of the city's environment and sustainability committee, said a 2015 survey found the layout of the routes was an issue.

Improving the bike lanes is part of the city's sustainability plan, says Coun. Mike Duffy. (Sarah MacMillan/CBC)

"The number one concern that they had was that we have all these bicycle routes but they don't connect to each other," said Duffy.

"A little bit of work can be done; we can make the routes connect to each other."

Duffy said improving the bike routes is in the city's sustainability plan.

The city has hired a consulting firm to look at design options to improve cycling routes, and connect them together. Duffy said he does not know how long that process will take.

He said the city will need funding partners in order to make the designs a reality.
