A Charlottetown hotel has decided to drop its long affiliation with Best Western and make a go at running as an independent.

The former Best Western Charlottetown on Grafton Street rebranded on Dec. 1, becoming Charlottetown Inn & Conference Centre.

General manager Wayne Cotton said management decided the appeal of the Charlottetown name was enough for the marketing of the hotel, without the support of Best Western.

Finances were not a major consideration in becoming independent, says hotel general manager Wayne Cotton. (Stephanie Brown/CBC)

"Obviously the biggest thing is the marketing and the exposure that the brand did have, so certainly Best Western had, world-wide, so many hotels, and yes there was a great presence with them," said Cotton.

"But, we really strongly believe that P.E.I. as a destination is a great spot for people to come."

Annual dues for Best Western were scheduled for payment Dec. 1, and that was the reason for the timing of the change, but Cotton said that cost was not a major reason behind the rebranding.

No changes will be made to staffing or operations, said Cotton.
