P.E.I. tuna fleet heading back out

P.E.I. tuna fishermen will be allowed back on the water starting Friday morning.

P.E.I. tuna fishermen will be allowed back on the water starting Friday morning.

Tuna quota from Newfoundland and St. Margaret's Bay, N.S., that hasn't been caught is being made available by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to fishermen who caught their quota weeks ago. P.E.I. fishermen will be allowed to catch 28 metric tonnes of tuna.

Fishermen say there are still a few tuna left off of P.E.I.'s North Shore, but boats will have to travel to Cape Breton to catch the rest.

Local industry representatives lobbied for the re-opening of the season. They were concerned if Canada didn't catch its full quota, it could come under international pressure to reduce the quota in future years.
