P.E.I. francophones demand action on old promise

The president of the SocitSaintThomasdAquin says its time for the provincial government to follow through on commitments to improve French services on the Island.

In 2010, Premier Ghiz announced a plan to revamp the French Language Services Act.

The changes would ensure that Islanders are offered services in French and English.

But there was no mention of the plan in Wednesdays speech from the throne.

"We were under the impression that the bill would be presented to this session," said SSTA President Gabriel Arsenault.

Services in several provincial departments including health, public safety and justice need to be changed, he said.

Premier Robert Ghiz said he wont make any promises, but he told Radio-Canada that he hopes to have the new act proclaimed in the fall session.

But Arsenault says thats not good enough. Hes demanding a meeting with the premier to discuss the issue.
