New magazine aimed at Chinese Islanders

A brand new publication launched Wednesday aimed at Chinese Islanders is getting a warm welcome from residents.

It's called Ni Hao PEI, which means "Hello P.E.I." in Mandarin.

The free monthly magazine is written in Mandarin, as well as in English.

Local realtor Hamish Redpath publishes it along with his Chinese business partner, Jason Liu.

Chinese students at Study Abroad Canada were some of first to see the debut issue.

"I think it's quite convenient for a lot of new immigrants [who] come here," said Judy Zong. "We're so happy to see Chinese."

"Why didn't it appear earlier? Still I'm so happy, finally we have Chinese newspaper," said Lilia Li, who's lived on the Island for three years.

It includes articles about P.E.I. and profiles of local Chinese and English-speaking Islanders. All of the ads are in Chinese.

The magazine is being distributed all over Charlottetown, including Chinese restaurants and grocery stores.

According to the Chinese Canadian Association of P.E.I., about 1,200 Chinese people currently live on the Island.
