Mary Moore-Phillips was elected as a Lennox Island First Nation Band Council off-reserve councillor in a byelection Saturday.

Christopher Sapier recently resigned from the position after moving back onto Lennox Island.

Moore-Phillips was a founding director of the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I.

Confederacy officials say she will bring a wealth of knowledge to the position.

Moore-Phillips won't be in her new position for long before heading back to the voters. A full election for band council and chief takes place in June 2016.
