Kenyan disabilities centre funded by P.E.I. group

A new rehabilitation centre for people with disabilities has opened its doors in Mikinduri, Kenya with the help of a P.E.I. development group.

The Mikinduri Children of Hope Foundation runs medical clinics in Kenya, and worked with the Kenyan government and a disabilities association to set up the rehab centre. The foundation raised $70,000 to pay for the building, and the government is paying to staff it.

Ted Grant, president of the Mikinduri Children of Hope Foundation, said staff in the foundation's medical clinics noticed a lot of people coming in had disabilities.

"The doctors and nurses, so on, felt it was important that we have to be able to do something with these people," said Grant.

"When people are disabled sometimes they get locked in the back room. The door is now open for these people that are hidden. This is their coming out party, I hope."

The centre opened last week.

Grant said this is just phase one of the foundation's plan. The group would like open rehab centres for people with disabilities in other remote towns.
