Humane shelter holding 2 for 1 cat sale

The P.E.I. Humane Society is holding a buy one, get one free sale for cats.

The P.E.I. Humane Society is holding a buy one, get one free sale for cats.

Lisa Hashie, of the society, said the shelter is overcrowded. It took in about 200 cats and kittens in the last month, but the shelter is only meant to hold 50.

"It does cost us money to have the animals here. We do pay for their spayed/neuter surgery. It costs us approximately $15 per day per animal at the shelter," Hashie said.

The cost of surgery for each animal is $75. The average length of stay for a cat is 20 days, according to the society.

"So this is not something we are doing because we are able afford to do it, we're doing it basically because we need to find these cats loving homes."

It's the first time the society has put on a BOGO sale. The first cat will cost about $150; the second will be free. The sale starts Thursday and ends Saturday.

Hashie hopes it will be an extra incentive for people who have been thinking of adopting a pet. Overcrowding can put animals under stress and spread disease, she said.
