A 603-kilogram pumpkin has broken the record for the largest grown on P.E.I.

The pumpkin was grown by Eddy Shaw of Charlottetown.

It weighed 45 kilograms more than the previous record holder.

It was weighed at the 22nd annual Giant Pumpkin and Squash Weigh Off at VeseysFarms.

P.E.I. Giant Pumpkin Growers Association president Gordon Aten says while lots of people have their own theories, he doesn't know exactly why or how some pumpkins reach that size.

"I haven't figured out the secret yet.The biggest one I ever grew was 800 pounds," said Aten.

"But the thing is, you need the right seed, it starts with that, the genetics. And a nice warm garden and lots of organic matter in your soil and a little bit of water and a lot of luck."
