Environmental groups want development stopped

Two environmental groups are asking P.E.I.'s Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to revoke a temporary development permit given to the Greenwich Dunes Resort. They are asking the federal government to review what the development will mean to neighbouring P.E.I. National Park.

P.E.I. has set 13 conditions which developer George Diercks must meet before he can break ground on his development.

They include botanical and wildlife surveys and numerous environmental management plans.

Not enough

Both Earth Action and the Canadian Nature Federation say the conditions are not enough.

Claiming the government is ignoring the fact the development sits next to a national park, they want the permit torn up.

"We know these developments ringing these national parks do have as much impact on the integrity of the park as do the developments within the park," says Sharon Labchuck of Earth Action.

The regulatory board says it would like to get the developer and both environmental groups together soon.

Labchuck says there'll be no compromise on the request to revoke the permit.
