Kensington, P.E.I., now has an emergency supplies depot thanks to the town, the Red Cross and community volunteers.

Setting up the depot at the town hall was prompted by a fire at the Clermont Motel during a storm in February, 2015 that left about 20 people in need of temporary shelter.

A community volunteer used social media to gather the supplies needed to quickly open an emergency centre and to get the motel residents there.

Mayor Rowan Caseley says space at the town hall has now been set aside as a collection area for Red Cross emergency supplies.

"It's a room about probably ten feet by ten feet and right now it's about half full of beds and blankets and emergency kits and some other supplies that were still left over after the fire last spring," he said.

"Town police have access to it if something should happen."

Caseley said the town's emergency plan has also been revised and will be going to council soon for final approval.

Two emergency shelter locations have been identified, including the town hall which has an emergency generator.

Caseley said it's great to know something is in place if the need arises.
